Step by step process on how to make a Knife Block
Today we are making a knife block with magnets. This is a very useful tool and a cool design to add in your kitchen. You can mount it and hold the knife securely and keep your space nice and organized.
Watch the video until the end, you will learn the techniques and step by step process of making this cool project. We have also listed the steps here as a guide, so stay tuned and enjoy!
Here are the materials you need:
- Wood Block
- Drill
- Sand Paper
- Magnets
- Wood Glue
- Measuring Tools
- Laser Machine
Let’s Start!
Software used for the design:
- CorelDraw (You can also use any vector based software like Illustrator or Inkscape.)
Step 1: Lay out the knives. This will help you determine the size of each knife on how it will look once you mount it onto your kitchen wall.
Step 2: Draw the dimensions of the Knives. It will serve as your reference when getting all the measurements.
Step 3: Open CorelDraw. Or use any vector-based software like Illustrator or Inkscape.
Step 4: Draw Holes for the magnets. Be sure to have enough space between each so once the knives are on the wall they have plenty of gap at least 30mm between each. Measure your widest knife and add 30mm, use this as the width of the boxes we used in the video.
Step 5: Create Knife shapes in CorelDraw. Here you can be imaginative and draw them however you like as this will be the place markers on the front for where you place the knives. You could just use dividers to mark where the knives sit. Though in this video we decided with a simple outline design of each of the knives that will go on each spot. This is why we needed to capture all the measurements of each knife so we can draw them accurately then scale them down to fit on our board. We scaled ours to 52mm high for each knife this kept them all uniform and looking nice.
Step 6: Cut the wood. We used a table saw though you can use a hand saw or any tool you have at hand.
Step 7. Laser etch Magnet positions: so you can precisely drill the hole locations and place the magnets accurately.
Step 8: Drill Holes. Here if you have a forstner bit that would be helpful as to have a flat base in the bottom of the hole. Our aim is to get the magnet as close to the surface as possible so to give more power to hold the knives. Your holes should be about 3mm from the surface. On the places for the bigger knives we used 2 magnets in each hole. All our magnets are 10mmx5mm Neodymium.
Step 9: Sand the wood. It is very important to sand your wood block as it fixes imperfections that may be in the wood, these defects such as scratches and indentations, or raised grain.
Step 10: Insert magnets on the holes
Step 11: Glue the magnets. Make sure to add a little glue before dropping the magnet in then push the magnet through so we get our magnets as close to the surface as possible for more knife holding strength.
Step 12: Laser knife drawings. This will make your knife block cool to look at when you mount it onto your kitchen wall. The details of the design will tie everything together.
This type of project is very interesting and very fun to do. This can be used in your kitchen or even as a gift to someone. You can also generate income by creating some. We are sure this article and video will help in case you’re planning to create something similar, maybe a new hobby, or even start your own business.
